Kay,

I'm not aware of any studies on the issue. Nor am I specifically aware of the legislative reason for the local option law. I'm also not able to discuss any of my personal opinions on the matter as I am a teacher in the community.

Sorry.

Hi,

I have never been to Nome, Alaska, but hope to go there someday. I am doing some research for an English course, and my thesis statement is: Although alcohol consumption is legal across America, Local Option laws in Alaska create additional alcohol abuse crimes because they establish individual violations, they encourage smugglers and bootleggers, and they impose federal postal regulations. As you can see, I'm curious about the effects of these crimes because of the local option laws. I am not having much luck finding any assessments done on the reduction of alcohol related crime or at least very current information. Didn't America decide not to have an out-law on alcohol? Do these laws really help? Or do they just make persons go underground? And, for the youth, good luck getting a job if competition for a job is high if you made a mistake by testing it out. Or for that matter, even for an adult to get a job with a mark of misdemeanor on your record. Anyway, can you help me find current information on this topic? Thank you for your attention and help.

Your impression is similar to many and I completely agree alcohol and mining is the darkness in Nome. But it's too bad you did not see some the beauty that goes hand in hand with the "dirty" aspects of Nome. I tend to see the cup half full and actually find most major cities dirtier than Nome. There are some really good people here and the beauty, well each person sees that differently I suppose.

On the flip-side, Nome has an active community that plans events and coordinates a variety of activities from beach clean ups to teen nights at the Boys and Girls club, to the U of A branch that offers a variety of courses for community members to enroll in throughout the year. True, Front Street isn't the most beautiful place. However, the land surrounding Nome offers a variety of landscapes and opportunities for recreation. My first visit to Nome, I felt the same as you. But then, upon choosing this community as a place to call home, I've realized that there is a healthy, thriving community set in a beautiful landscape for those who choose to look for it.
