I noticed that you run your ubuntu session via X11 on the Mac. I don't know where I'm going to find all the useful command line commands to launch the useful GUI utils, but I'm finding my way through. I hate having to run a full gnome session just to launch one app. I have just found that you can launch the "Add/Remove Programs" program from the command line: gnome-app-install if that helps you at all. I have just found that you can launch the “Add/Remove Programs” program from the command line:

gnome-app-install

if that helps you at all.

Click on that arrow and you should get an error message that actually tells you something. If you aren't sure what it means, type it out here and I can probably help you.
